A bill is in the Senate waiting waiting for a vote after passing a preliminary committee.
If it becomes law, same sex couples can start planning their special day. That means the wedding industry stands to see more customers.
It's already enjoying a boost in business now that Illinois allows civil unions legally.
But since many gay couples are holding out for marriage, the industry could see even more business.
Dennis Luna of Bloomington runs Dynamic Sound, a professional and licensed D.J. service.
He said Monday gay marriage has the potential to open up his customer base and allow him to book more events.
But he said it comes down to a question of morality for each individual wedding vendor. He said some might have a religious issue with being involved with same sex marriages.
For him, he said it is no issue.
He said he cares more about whether the couple is getting married for the right reason.
"I don't think they're going to jump on the bandwagon and say, 'Let's go ahead and do it.' Personally, I wouldn't want clients like that, whether they're heterosexual or gay," he said.
Luna also said some vendors might start marketing specifically to same sex couples. But on the flip side he said that might turn away other customers.
The gay marriage bill is facing an uncertain future in Springfield.
Senate leaders haven't said when it could come up for a vote, and a new General Assembly is sworn in on Wednesday.
